  Basic Atomic Structure

Since all matter is made up of atoms we will begin with a somewhat simplified description of atomic structure. The atom consists of three major, extremely small, building blocks called protons, neutrons and electrons. Protons have a positive charge, while electrons are negatively charged and neutrons are neutral (no charge). Note that in reality, the size of the electron is much smaller than the size of the proton or the neutron.
