In the mid-1960's an Irish physicist, John Bell, showed that evidence for this type of hidden information could be demonstrated experimentally. Ingenious experiments were carried out by a number of groups with the conclusion that there is no hidden information – Einstein appeared to be wrong! For many people this validated one of the weirdest cornerstones of quantum mechanics. Acceptance is not universal though and there are many people who expect quantum mechanics to be replaced by another more fundamental theory which does not need to invoke action at a distance. Einstein's dream may still be answered, and maybe by someone reading this today… |
