Because of the "commaless" nature of the genetic code, the message can be interpreted in three different ways depending on the starting point for the translation of the message. The three reading frames result in three different proteins with different biological functions. Frequently, the ribosome run into an in frame stop codon when in the erroneous reading frames (reading frame 3 in the example below).
